Stick
Insects (Phasmids)
Stick
insects are one of the most well known captive reared invertebrates,
proving a popular pet both in the home, and in the science lab at
school. This is probably because a few of the species are very interesting
(and fairly perculiar I might add), but easy to keep. Most stick
insects have no form of defense, other than disguising themselves
as a twig.
Stick
insects are herbivores, feeding on leaves only. The main foodsource
available for captive bred specimens, is bramble. This is eaten
by nearly all species, and conveniently, it is a common plant, although
picking it can sometimes be a little tricky! Other foodsources include
oak, bramble, ivy, and many more. For more details, please see the
menu to the left.
I
have categorised this into species, so please click on the species
care you would like to view. Alternatively, you can look at the
general care guidelines at the top of the page.
